What is a Neuropsychological Evaluation?
A neuropsychological evaluation is a comprehensive evaluation in which an individuals range of cognitive functioning including attention, executive functions, memory, language, and social-emotional functioning, among other areas are assessed. Often times, children are referred for psychoeducational evaluations which typically test cognitive abilities (IQ score) and academic achievement. While these are included in a neuropsychological evaluation, a neuropsychological evaluation is broader in scope and provides powerful information as to how a person thinks and learns. A neuropsychological evaluation ultimately yields a great deal of data on an individuals full range of cognitive functioning, allowing recommendations and supports to be precisely targeted to the individual.
